HOW IMPORTANT IS A NAME?
1 O LORD, our Lord, How excellent is Your
name in all the earth. Psalm 8:1a (NKJV)
For most people, their name is very important to them. People like to
see their name in print, but they want it spelled correctly. People like
to hear their name announced, but they want it pronounced correctly.
People want their name remembered, so they purchase elaborate tombstones
or pay large sums of money to have a building or another prominent
structure named after them.
But how important is your name to others? For some people it is
important enough to hire a Public Relations Person to make sure the name
is known. Others don’t want people to know what they do as their name is
not important when compared to what they want to do for others.
Maybe this is why it is so easy for people to tell story after story
about Nicole, Paris, Brittany, Barry, Justin, and others, and stumble
and stutter when trying to say something about what the Name of God
means to them.
The Psalmist has no hesitation. "O LORD, our Lord, How excellent is
Your name in all the earth," he writes. Excellent as in nothing better,
the best of the best. We often do not share with the Psalmist that same
excitement about the Name of our Lord. We will read all we can if the
name of a celebrity is mentioned, but seldom think about the Name of
God. We read the words in Scripture, "In the Name of Jesus, arise and
walk." Don’t you think that lame man exalted the Name of Jesus as he
walked away? Sure he did! What power is in that Name. What power
that Name can have in our lives. A God who said, "Let there be light"
and there was light. What Power in that Name!
Before you can Praise and Exalt the Name of God for others to know, the
Name of God must have the highest place in your life.
WE PRAY: Lord, Send your Holy Spirit upon me, and reveal to me the
real greatness and power that you have. Then Lord, help me to exalt your
name by the way that I live. May people just see my actions and know
that I am a Child of God. AMEN.
A SUGGESTION FOR LIVING THE DEVOTION
We wear hats, shirts, coats and other items that proclaim the names of people, schools, products, even ideas and concepts. What do you wear that exalts the Name of the Lord?
