DON’T TRY TO UNDERSTAND IT!

21 In that hour Jesus rejoiced in the Spirit and said, "I thank You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent and revealed them to babes. Even so, Father, for so it seemed good in Your sight. 22 All things have been delivered to Me by My Father, and no one knows who the Son is except the Father, and who the Father is except the Son, and the one to whom the Son wills to reveal Him." 23 Then He turned to His disciples and said privately, "Blessed are the eyes which see the things you see; 24 for I tell you that many prophets and kings have desired to see what you see, and have not seen it, and to hear what you hear, and have not heard it." Luke 10:21-24 (NKJV)

We live in a day when many of the teachings recorded in Scripture that were once held sacred are now debated and doubted. These verses from St. Luke, Chapter 10 provide us with thoughts for meditation that might prepare us for such discussions.

From verse 21, we must ask ourselves, Am I wise and prudent or am I a babe? By definition wise suggests that you know all. If you recall in the Old Testament, the prophets were the "wise" people and were expected to know all. If some of the wicked Kings wanted to know something, even if there was no way of anyone knowing it, and the prophets did not have an answer, they could be put to death. Prudent suggests shrewdness in planning. Babe refers to the little children. The wise and the prudent then are those that are shrewd and know everything. This does not mean that they are educated for we know many people without any education who "know everything." The babes are those who are like little babies as they grow, always seeking to learn, always trusting and having open minds. This does not mean that if you are educated that you can’t be like a baby as many highly educated people seek to learn something new every day.

In verse 22. we learn that of all who walked on the Earth up until that time, only Jesus knew that He was God’s Son. Remember that John the Baptist sent his followers to ask Jesus, "Are you the One who was to come or should we look for another?"

Verse 23-24 bring the highlight of the text when Jesus says to His disciples, privately (that is with nobody else near enough to hear,) "Blessed are the eyes which see the things you see; 24 for I tell you that many prophets and kings have desired to see what you see, and have not seen it, and to hear what you hear, and have not heard it." Jesus is simply saying, you have seen and heard what I have revealed to you because you have listened with open ears and have seen with open eyes, You have been like babes grasping a new found finger or thumb, rejoicing in what you have received and not wanting to let go. On the other hand, the wise prophets and Kings have determined who the Messiah would be and what He would be like and they have waited for His coming.

When they saw Me, their eyes were closed and their ears were shut so that even though I was in their presence they neither heard or saw me. If we will be like babes, we only need to believe and grasp on to that belief, we don’t need to understand.

We Pray: Lord, Hear my prayer as I pray in the words the father of the child with a mute spirit, "Lord, I believe, help Thou my unbelief." St. Mark 9:24
